"The Abbott Government has failed to rule out pouring taxpayer money into Adani’s unviable project, which no bank will touch, through the $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility.

“In their Budget papers, the Palaszczuk Government has flagged that they are considering seeking federal funding for the Galilee rail line on behalf of big coal barons.

Senator Waters comments on the government's own modelling showing Tony Abbott over-exaggerated the cost of climate action:

"You can't trust Tony Abbott, especially when it comes to climate change," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens climate change spokesperson, said.

"The overdue release of the government's modelling late Friday afternoon reveals that Tony Abbott told Australians the cost of a 40 per cent target was more than four times what was actually modelled.

The Queensland Government report that shows underground coal gasification has contaminated prime agricultural land near Chinchilla and reports of investigators becoming sick should spell the end of the industry.

"Governments are using Queensland communities and the prime agricultural land they farm as test bunnies," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader, said.

"It's time to end this toxic experiment with our land, water and people's health that is underground coal gasification and coal seam gas mining alike.

The Abbott Government's reported 2030 climate target is less than half of what the Climate Change Authority, the government's independent expert body, has recommended as a bare minimum.

Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, said:

"This is a weak target from a weak Prime Minister that cements Australia as the worst polluter per capita in the world, trashing our international reputation.   

The Abbott Government Cabinet needs to listen to the majority of Australians who want climate action in its meeting today to decide on post-2020 targets.

Commenting on the Climate Institute's review of public attitudes, released today, Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, said:

"Not only is Tony Abbott ignoring the science and snubbing the rest of the world, he is completely out of touch with most Australians, who understand climate action means new jobs.  

The Australian Greens condemn the Prime Minister's criticism of the Federal Court's decision to uphold federal environment law and overturn the approval of Adani's Carmichael coal mine.

"The Prime Minister's willingness to sideline environmental protection in favour of Adani comes down to his obsession with coal and hatred of renewables," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, said.

The Australian Greens welcome the Commonwealth Bank's decision to end its relationship with Adani and wholeheartedly congratulate the divestment movement.

"Not only is it environmentally irresponsible to back Galilee Basin coal, it doesn't stack up economically," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate spokesperson, said.

"Eleven banks around the world have ruled out involvement in the Galilee Basin coal mines exporting through the Reef.

President Obama's clean energy plan must serve as an urgent wake up call to Prime Minister Abbott.

"Why is Tony Abbott so ready to follow the US blindly into a war with no clear plan but when it comes to climate action to save our very way of life he runs a mile?"

"While President Obama is shutting down polluting coal, Tony Abbott is still obsessed with propping up the dying coal industry to please his donor mates.

Oxfam’s report Powering Up Against Poverty, released today, shows why renewable energy will save and improve lives in developing countries while coal will further destroy them.

“Coal is good for the Liberal Party’s donations, not humanity,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Acting Leader, said

“Tony Abbott’s destructive spin about coal and poverty benefits only his mining company donors, who use the same self-serving rhetoric.

Having conversations is one of the most accessible and effective ways to change attitudes.

With global warming well and truly back on the political agenda now is a great opportunity to reengage with family and friends about global warming, it's impacts on our lives and economy and what we need to do about it.
