Minister Hunt’s sneaky attempt to co-opt Sir David’s Reef documentary to downplay impacts is offensive

Environment Minister Hunt's attempt to use Sir David Attenborough's documentary to downplay threats to the Great Barrier Reef, including those inflicted by the government, is disingenuous.

Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, Qld Senator Larissa Waters, who met Sir David Attenborough at the Paris climate talks where she watched parted of his documentary, said:

"Sir David Attenborough has long warned strongly of the grave impacts of global warming and is a leading supporter of the global transition to renewable energy.

Greens call for $90 million funding boost for Reef Marine Park Authority and Reef scientists

The Australian Greens are calling for a funding boost for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority by $82 million over four years to help the Reef survive future bleaching events.

Qld Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, also committed to an extra $8 million over four years for the Australian Institute of Marine Science.   

"To save the Reef from global warming we must stop allowing new coal mines and transition to 100 per cent job-rich renewable energy as rapidly as possible," Senator Waters said.

Level 3 bleaching event makes choice even more stark – it’s coral or coal

The Greens are calling on the Turnbull and Palaszczuk governments to stop allowing new coal mines in the wake of the coral bleaching threat increasing to three - the highest level.

Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, said:

"Increased monitoring is important but if we continue to open new coal mines the monitoring results will only get worse and worse.

"Both the Liberal federal government and the Labor state government are letting the Reef be used as a highway for coal and gas.

(i)   the Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel, stated on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Q&A program that Australia is 'losing the battle' against global warming,

(ii)   Professor Terry Hughes has told 'The Conversation' that Australia can either develop new coal mines or protect the Great Barrier Reef, but 'we can't possibly do both',

Climate targets so bad the Government claims they’re being met as pollution increases

The national emissions figures released today show the Turnbull Government’s climate pollution reduction targets are so bad that the government is claiming they are being met even though climate pollution is up.

Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens climate change spokesperson, said:

“In a sign of just how dodgy the accounting behind their climate targets is, the government is claiming to be meeting its 2020 target even though climate pollution is up.
