Great Barrier Reef & Coral Sea

The Great Barrier Reef is our most iconic World Heritage area and attracts more than 1.6 million visitors each year. It contributes almost $6 billion to the Australian economy each year and employs over 54,000 people.

The Greens are acting to protect the Great Barrier Reef from mounting threats like dredging for coal and coal seam gas shipping, climate change, ocean acidification and over-fishing, which threaten its World Heritage status.

Australia’s Coral Sea in Queensland’s north eastern waters spans one million square kilometres, with spectacular coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife, including many endangered species.
The Greens want the Coral Sea to be fully protected to become the world’s largest marine national park.
