Big business claims over impact of federal environment protection are false

Big business outcry over the Senate saving federal environment protection from Tony Abbott’s one-stop shop shows complete disregard for our most important natural assets, many of which underpin sustainable industries, say the Australian Greens.

Audit report shows big mining companies can get away with flouting environmental conditions

The Auditor General’s report on environmental protection shows the federal environment department is under-resourced and failing to enforce environmental conditions.

Abbott Government ignores World Heritage concern just before Great Barrier Reef ‘In Danger’ decision

 The Abbott Government last night passed a bill through the Lower House to hand federal environmental approval powers to the states, ignoring the World Heritage Committee’s concern about this environmentally disastrous plan.

“UNESCO is currently meeting to decide whether to downgrade the Great Barrier Reef’s World Heritage status to ‘In Danger’ and has expressed concern about the Abbott Government’s hasty handover of federal approval powers to the states,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

More secret environment job cuts show Newman can’t be trusted with federal environmental responsibilities

Reports today that koala experts and conservation advisors have been axed from Queensland's environment department by the Newman Government are an outrage and show he cannot be trusted with federal environmental responsibilities, say the Australian Greens.

"Slashing 30 more jobs from Queensland's environment department after last year's cuts of 220 jobs means 250 fewer people to protect Queensland's environment, which is exactly what Premier Newman wants - open slather for the big miners," said Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson.
