Auditors' report shows Abbot Point dumping permit approval shonky – GBRMPA should have funding to fix the process

The Australian National Audit Office's report into Great Barrier Reef permits reveals a sloppy approvals process, especially in the case of the Abbot Point dumping permit.

"The audit shows the incredibly sloppy process that led to the Abbot Point offshore dumping permit being granted without enough time or information," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.  

"This vindicates why the community with the Greens campaigned successfully to cancel the offshore Abbot Point dumping permit.

Senate unanimously calls for federal funding to save cassowary from extinction

The Senate has unanimously passed an Australian Greens' motion calling for urgent federal funding for cassowary conservation and rehabilitation.  

Queensland Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and environment spokesperson, said:

"We're pleased that all Senators supported the Greens' motion, and that in response to the motion the federal government said it would write to the state government about funding.

Queensland’s shark program needs urgent review to end marine wildlife deaths

Following the release of graphic footage by Sea Shepherd of marine wildlife entangled in shark nets and caught on drumlines, the Australian Greens say that Queensland’s system of shark nets and drum lines must be urgently reviewed.

 “We’re calling on the Queensland Government to swiftly end this indiscriminate torture of protected wildlife," said Greens Senator for Queensland, Deputy Leader Larissa Waters.

Senate Inquiry report recommends Abbott Government reverse completely de-funding Environmental Defenders Offices

The Senate Inquiry into the Abbott Government's attacks on the environment has reported this afternoon with recommendations to reinstate funding for Environmental Defenders' Offices and conservation projects.

In Additional Comments, the Australian Greens recommended the government abandon its ideological attack on the deductible gift recipient status of environment organisations.

The Greens also recommended the Abbott Government remove its gag clauses in funding agreements with environment organisations.

The Australian Greens will move for a Senate Inquiry into the fossil fuel industry's influence over politics, as the House of Representatives inquiry hearings into removing tax deductibility from environment groups begin today.

Draft decision to retain Reef In-Danger warning shows Abbot Point must be stopped

Following the release of the World Heritage Committee’s draft decision to keep the Great Barrier Reef on the ‘In Danger’ watch list, the Abbott and Palaszczuk governments must abandon their plan to turn the Reef into a coal and LNG super highway. 

“UNESCO is keeping the Reef on the watch list and has given Australia 18 months to report progress,” Queensland Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader, said.
