Abbott and Newman ignore market with coal at all costs agenda

The Abbott and Newman Governments are ignoring dwindling global coal demand and the oversupply of ports in Queensland in their push for mega coal mining in the Galilee Basin with export through the Great Barrier Reef.

"The Abbott and Newman governments are insanely pushing ahead with their industrialisation of the Great Barrier Reef, even though the market reality is that more coal ports for the Reef aren't wanted or needed," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Comment on Mineral’s Councils plans to gut EIA

More secret environment job cuts show Newman can’t be trusted with federal environmental responsibilities

Reports today that koala experts and conservation advisors have been axed from Queensland's environment department by the Newman Government are an outrage and show he cannot be trusted with federal environmental responsibilities, say the Australian Greens.

Newman Government locks in decades more destructive sand mining on Straddie

The Newman Government has today ignored environmental concerns and the opposition of Traditional Owners by introducing legislation to extend sand mining on North Stradbroke Island until as late as 2040.

"Despite serious environmental impacts and pleas from traditional owners for the mining to stop, Campbell Newman is extending sand mining on Straddie until up to 2040 for the very mining company that helped to pay for the election campaign that saw him become premier," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Labor has wasted its opportunity to protect Stradbroke Island from Campbell Newman’s planned sand mining extension and, if prime minister, Tony Abbott is set to give Mr Newman control of Straddie, say the Australian Greens.

“We’re well overdue for federal intervention to stop Campbell Newman from prolonging sand mining  which could irreparably damage Stradbroke Island’s internationally significant wetlands,  ancient sand dunes and old-growth forests,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Labor’s national park review fails to meet protection promise

Labor is all talk and no action on protecting national parks, with today’s announcement for a review about whether or not to protect them, say the Australian Greens.

“After six years in government doing nothing to protect national parks, calling for a review is a pathetic show of inaction from Labor and demonstrates they can’t be trusted on the environment,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.
