Labor states must follow federal lead and refuse Abbott’s one-stop shop at COAG

Labor states should reject Tony Abbott’s ‘one stop shop’ plan at COAG on Friday, following federal Labor’s support for a Greens’ amendment against the plan in federal Parliament last night.

Greens to block Abbott gutting threatened species protection

The Australian Greens will move amendments in the Lower House today to stop the Abbott Government from ripping up threatened species protection.

“The Abbott Government wants to remove the community’s right to take the government to court if it ignores expert advice on threatened species impacts when approving major developments, like massive mines and coal ports,” Adam Bandt, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens, said.

Minister Hunt to put fox in charge of the henhouse

The Abbott Government is prepared to give state governments the power to approve their own development projects under national environment law without federal approval, despite earlier commitments to the contrary, Senate Estimates have revealed today under questioning from the Australian Greens.

"Giving state governments the final say on whether their own major infrastructure projects go ahead, despite the environmental impacts, will leave the fox in charge of the henhouse," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Abbott Government eroding threatened species protection

The Australian Greens today condemned the Abbott Government's proposed changes to environment law that remove community rights to challenge development approvals that ignore expert advice on threatened species impacts.

"With this damaging amendment, the Environment Minister could tick off on major developments without considering expert advice on threatened species impacts and the community would have no power to hold the government to account in court," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Abbott slashes NSW national environment protection

The Abbott and O'Farrell governments' one-stop-shop agreement, signed today, would effectively gut national environment protection in New South Wales, say the Australian Greens.

"New South Wales' most precious natural places and wildlife are next up for sale in Tony Abbott's planned one-stop shop for big business run by environmentally negligent state premiers," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.
