Senate passes Greens’ motion calling on politicians to boycott the World Congress of Families

The Australian Senate has passed a Greens’ motion calling on politicians to boycott the World Congress of Families conference in Melbourne on Saturday, including Social Services Minister, Kevin Andrews, who plans to open the conference.

“The World Congress of Families campaigns internationally for the criminalisation of LGBTIQ people and against women having abortions, even when their lives are at risk,” Senator Larissa Waters Australian Greens spokesperson for women said.

The Australian Greens are calling on all politicians not to attend World Congress of Families, following more harmful repetitions of the completely discredited myth connecting abortion and breast cancer. 

“Fred Nile’s remarks, like Senator Abetz’s, are insulting, insensitive and completely untrue,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for Women, said.

The Australian Greens have put a motion to the Senate to condemn the sexist, misogynistic and racist slogans that Wicked Campers have on their hire vans.

“We’re calling out these demeaning slogans that promote sexual violence against women, which tragically is a massive problem in Australia,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for women, said.

“One in every three Australian women over the age of 15 have experienced violence and one in every five have experienced sexual violence.

Abbott Government entrenches gender inequality of superannuation

The Australian Greens have moved a second reading amendment to the mining tax repeal bill in the Senate to oppose the Abbott Government’s abolition of the Low Income Super Contribution, which will disproportionately impact women.

The Australian Greens support Oxfam’s calls today for equal pay to be on the G20 agenda, following the release of a report that shows it will take 75 years to achieve globally with current efforts.

“Women can’t wait around for 75 years to earn equal pay,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for women, said.

“We need to dramatically accelerate efforts to achieve equal pay and a good way to do this is by putting the issue front and centre at the G20.

The Australian Greens welcome the news that the Second Action Plan to stop domestic violence will be released today but are concerned it cannot overcome the harm the Abbott Government’s budget cuts will inflict on victims of domestic violence.

The Australian Greens proposal for a Senate Inquiry into domestic violence has passed the Senate with tri-partisan support today.
