Newman Government’s uranium push threatens economy, health, environment and ultimately the Great Barrier Reef

The Newman Government’s new framework for uranium mining makes no economic or environmental sense and threatens the health of Queenslanders.

“The uranium price has been in free fall since 2007 and governments around the world are shutting down nuclear power stations,” Australian Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters said.

"As well as making no economic sense, uranium mining is bad for the health of mine workers, as well as residents near mines and on uranium transport routes.

Greens Act to Save Reef from Uranium and World Heritage In-Danger Listing

The Australian Greens will introduce a bill to Parliament tomorrow to save the Great Barrier Reef from uranium shipping and being added to the World Heritage list of sites in danger.

"Premier Newman is considering shipping uranium through the reef and the World Heritage committee is warning the reef is being overrun with development," Senator Larissa Waters, the Australian Greens Great Barrier Reef spokesperson, said.

Uranium mining a dead-end road for Queensland

The Queensland Government's decision to pursue uranium mining breaks a promise by Premier Newman and will yield "all risks and no rewards", the Australian Greens warned today as a report on establishing the industry in the state was released.

Australian Greens nuclear policy spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said "uranium mining makes no economic sense and no environmental sense for Queensland".

Uranium mining all risk, no benefit for Queensland

Lifting the ban on uranium mining in Queensland is the latest broken promise by Premier Newman and is another blow in the Queensland Government’s attack on the environment, the Australian Greens said today.

“Throwing open Queensland to uranium mining again is a toxic, dangerous and completely unnecessary step for the sunshine state,” Australian Greens Senator for Queensland, Larissa Waters, said.

 “It is environmentally and economically risky, and adds insult to injury after the Premier has slashed large and small scale solar power programs across the state.

Queensland not safe from uranium rush

Australian Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters said today that the Queensland Labor Government is set to be rolled on dangerous uranium exports, in the face of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s determination to sell uranium to nuclear-armed India.

“Queensland will not be immune from the short-sighted and dangerous greed to export uranium to India, which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” Senator Waters said.
