Abbott approves world’s largest coal port in Great Barrier Reef

The Abbott Government's disregard for the climate and the Great Barrier Reef is criminal, said the Australian Greens today as the Abbott Government approved the Abbot Point coal port expansion and the Curtis Island gas processing facility.

"The Abbott Government has sacrificed the climate and the Great Barrier Reef for overseas mining companies with its approval today of the world's largest coal port and another CSG plant in our Great Barrier Reef," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Senate calls on Abbott Government to provide overdue funding for Queensland’s Wet Tropics

The Senate has passed a Greens' motion today calling on the Abbott Government to urgently provide overdue base funding to the Wet Tropics Management Authority.

"Alarmingly, the Wet Tropics Management Authority hasn't yet received its base funding for this financial year which is now almost six months overdue," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Labor states should reject Tony Abbott’s ‘one stop shop’ plan at COAG on Friday, following federal Labor’s support for a Greens’ amendment against the plan in federal Parliament last night.

“Labor state governments must follow federal Labor’s lead and loudly reject Tony Abbott’s environmentally destructive plan at COAG on Friday,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Greens to block Abbott gutting threatened species protection

The Australian Greens will move amendments in the Lower House today to stop the Abbott Government from ripping up threatened species protection.

“The Abbott Government wants to remove the community’s right to take the government to court if it ignores expert advice on threatened species impacts when approving major developments, like massive mines and coal ports,” Adam Bandt, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens, said.

Greens welcome Woop Woop horse riders campaigning for clean water and no CSG mining

WHAT:  Donna and Mick Franklin are riding to Canberra to raise awareness about the dangers of Coal Seam Gas mining and the importance of water as part of ‘The Woop, Woop Ride’ campaign. Donna and Mick have been riding for three months with a team of nine horses.

Starting at Grafton in September and following the National Trail stock routes, they have braced bushfires, thunderstorms and flooded river crossings.
