Today is World Refugee Day. By the end of 2018, more than 70 million people had been forced to flee their homes. This is a horrific and tragic statistic. There are still hundreds of men and women detained on Manus Island and Nauru, because of cruelty inflicted by the Australian Government.
On Palm Sunday, I spoke to hundreds who gathered in Brisbane calling on the Government to Close the Camps and Bring them Here. I firmly believe most Australians are warm and welcoming, and want people seeking asylum to be protected, not punished.
We Greens will keep pushing to end the offshore torture camps, to speed up processing times to no more than 28 days, and to support new Australians to be part of our community. Basic humanity should never be abused for political point scoring!
