Senator Waters comments on the government's own modelling showing Tony Abbott over-exaggerated the cost of climate action:
"You can't trust Tony Abbott, especially when it comes to climate change," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens climate change spokesperson, said.
"The overdue release of the government's modelling late Friday afternoon reveals that Tony Abbott told Australians the cost of a 40 per cent target was more than four times what was actually modelled.
"What about the cost of not acting on climate change, while the rest of the world races ahead with renewable technology?
"Australia is missing out economically on the job and trade opportunities of transitioning to a clean energy economy.
"Instead Tony Abbott is throwing our lot in with the dying coal industry and making up numbers to try and cover up how economically irresponsible this is.
"Tony Abbott keeps telling Australians Adani's mine will create 10 000 jobs but Adani has admitted in court that it's 1464. What's more, the project has no finance, so there's no guaranteed jobs.
"Tony Abbott also fudged the numbers with his weak carbon pollution reduction targets by changing the baseline to compare reductions with a historically high year for emissions.
"Australians and the rest of the world see through the tricky numbers and see Tony Abbott for the climate laggard he is," Senator Waters said.
