Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate spokesperson, comments on the G7’s agreement to end the fossil fuel era:

“The world wants to put an end to the fossil fuel era and move to the age of renewables.

“But, just as he is on equal marriage and gender equality, Tony Abbott is stuck in the past and is ignoring the fact that Australians want climate action and renewable energy.

“The Abbott Government is still handing out billions in subsidies to big mining companies in the form of fuel tax credits and exploration incentives.

“Tony Abbott has even come up with a new $5 billion slush fund to use taxpayers’ money to prop up commercially unviable to coal mines.

“We are the only country to have scrapped a price on carbon and reduced ambition on renewable energy. Tony Abbott is an international humiliation and Australians deserve better.

“We should be a global leader in renewable take-up and technology to provide the jobs of the future and help safeguard the world from extreme weather events,” Senator Waters said.
