The Palmer United Party looks set to allow the Abbott Government to gut national environment protection.
“PUP Senators have an opportunity to block Tony Abbott’s plan to give state governments the final say over whether environmentally destructive projects should go ahead,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.
“But PUP looks set to pass Tony Abbott’s plan to remove federal approval powers for environmentally destructive projects through the Senate.
“Federal environment protection has been in place for more than 30 years to protect our most precious places, like our Great Barrier Reef and the Kimberley, and our most vulnerable species, like koalas and bilbies.
“Tony Abbott is trying to rip up national environment protection to give free reign to the very state premiers who are threatening our national parks with grazing, shooting, logging and mining.
“And PUP, led by a coal baron, looks set to let Tony Abbott get away with this plan to gut decades worth of national environment protection.
“PUP’s plan to retain the water trigger, a fraction of our existing federal environmental protections, is an attempt to put lipstick on a pig.
“It is not an improvement on what we have – PUP could help save our environment laws but instead PUP is helping to water them down.
“Of course groundwater needs federal protection but so too do our endangered species and World Heritage Areas,” Senator Waters said.
