MPs must not attend World Congress of Families

Media Release
Larissa Waters 22 Aug 2014

The Australian Greens are calling on all politicians not to attend World Congress of Families, following more harmful repetitions of the completely discredited myth connecting abortion and breast cancer.

“Fred Nile’s remarks, like Senator Abetz’s, are insulting, insensitive and completely untrue,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for Women, said.

“These comments are driven by anti-choice ideology rather than the science.

“This is ‘old-white-men think’ trying to trample over women’s rights and choices and take us back to the 1950s.

“The World Congress of Families is full of homophobic, sexist and anti-choice prejudices and it’s unacceptable for members of parliament to be attending, including federal employment minister Eric Abetz and federal social services minister Kevin Andrews.

“Homophobia, sexism and anti-choice ideology needs to be stamped out, not legitimised at a congress that ignores science, women’s rights and LGBTI rights,” Senator Waters said.
