Environment Department under attack

Reports today that the Federal Department of the Environment is planning to cut a further 500 jobs over the next 3 years is extremely worrying, say the Australian Greens.

"Slashing 500 more jobs from the Environment Department after last year's cuts of almost 200 jobs means up to 700 fewer people to protect Australia's environment, which is exactly what Abbott wants," said Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson.

"Tony Abbott is washing his hands of environmental responsibilities and trying to reduce protection of our land, water, climate and beloved wildlife all for his mining mates.

"His plan to hand over sole control to state premiers, for a ‘one-stop-shop' for the environment is sheer madness.

"State governments have an appalling track record on environmental protection - that's why federal environmental oversight was first brought in more than 30 years ago.

"Gutting the federal environment department, is further proof of Abbott's anti-environment agenda.

"Tony Abbott and his state cronies are doing all they can to please their mates in big mining at the expense of the environment and community," Senator Waters said.
