Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, Senator Larissa Waters, comments on China's emissions reduction target:

"Instead of playing down China's globally conscious pledge, as Minister Bishop has, the Abbott Government needs to take note and dramatically increase its pathetic level of climate ambition.

"Australia's 5 per cent 2020 target is pitiful and unlikely to be met. It would be internationally unacceptable and see Australia miss great economic opportunities if that low level of ambition is continued in our post 2020 targets.

"The Abbott Government is making Australia an international pariah on climate change, especially in our region, where China is taking real action and our Pacific neighbours already face climate devastation.

"The renewable technology is there for ambitious, internationally acceptable targets.

"Tony Abbott and his fossil fuel donors need to get out of the way of Australia's clean energy revolution and the thousands of jobs it will provide for generations to come," Senator Waters said.
