Queensland landholders are only signing agreements with coal seam gas companies because they don’t have the right to deny access, say the Australian Greens.
“Qld Gas Corporation is boasting that it has signed agreements with 1700 Queenslanders but this is only because landholders don’t have the right to say no to coal seam gas,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens mining spokesperson, said.
“Landholders don’t have a choice when coal seam gas companies come knocking.
“For QGC to boast that no landholder has taken them to court is desperate PR spin – the real story is landholders don’t have the right to take CSG miners to court because the old parties refuse to give landholders that right.
“The old parties are so wedded to the mining industry that they haven’t given landholders the right to say no to coal seam gas mining on their own property.
“The Greens have had a bill in the Senate since 2011 to allow landholders to say no to CSG, and we will not give up on Australian farmers,” Senator Waters said.
