Abbott Government must revoke Abbot Point decision given alarming FOI revelations

The Australian Greens are moving a Senate motion for vote tomorrow calling on the Abbott Government to revoke its approval of the Abbot Point coal port expansion, given alarming new information revealed under FOI.

“In these FOI documents, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority raises serious concerns about long-term irreversible damage to nearby coral reefs and seagrass beds,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

“The Reef Authority’s documents say the damage would be so great that it would be impossible to offset and the dumping should be refused outright.

“Minister Hunt has been telling us that the damage from the Abbot Point dumping can be offset with his conditions but these documents show that’s simply not the case.

“Minister Hunt needs to revoke his approval, as these documents show the conditions attached won’t make up for the damage, as he claims.

“Our Great Barrier Reef should not be treated as a dump ground for dredge sludge, simply because it’s cheaper for the big mining companies than disposing on land,” Senator Waters said.
