Abbott Government all talk and no action on native species extinctions

The Abbott Government is undermining threatened species conservation, despite a new report showing Australia has the worst rate of mammal extinctions in the world.

“Greg Hunt is all talk and no action on threatened species conservation,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

“The Abbott Government has scrapped the $1 billion Biodiversity Fund, slashed Environment Department staff and funding for conservation groups, and wants to abandon action on climate change

“Its proposed threatened species commissioner has no statutory backing and is an unfunded fig leaf to try and cover the fact that the Abbott Government is continuing to allow the destruction of threatened species habitat and ignore climate change.

“The Abbott Government is trying to remove protection for Tasmanian forests, home to the Tassie devil, so that it can be logged.

“The Abbott Government is also allowing sea bed to be dredged and dumped in the Great Barrier Reef for the big mining companies, which will destroy feeding grounds for turtles and dugongs.

“If Greg Hunt is genuinely worried about our threatened species, why is he letting precious habitat be logged, mined, dredged and dumped on?” Senator Waters said.
