Abbott’s not-so-secret goal? To destroy renewables

Media Release
Larissa Waters 11 Jun 2015

Tony Abbott has admitted today that the intention of his deal with Labor to slash our Renewable Energy Target was not to give clean energy certainty but to destroy the industry.

"Tony Abbott has jeopardised any certainty that his deal with Labor was supposed to provide when he, quite literally, spelt out that his goal was to 'R-E-D-U-C-E' clean energy," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Acting Leader and climate spokesperson, said.

"It's clear that even the slashed target of 33 000 GWh is not certain under the Abbott Government, with the Prime Minister saying he would have cut to the number of windfarms even more if he could.

"There has been extensive research into windfarms and no credible health body or medical journal in the world supports the idea of wind turbine syndrome.

"The Abbott Government needs to stop ignoring science in its deluded attempt to hold back renewable energy to prop up its big mining company donors.                                                                                                                                                                     "Tony Abbott is attacking an industry and workers that otherwise would have a bright, sustainable future.

"What's more, Labor is failing to stand up to the anti-science, climate-laggard Abbott Government and is remaining on the slippery slope to an even lower Renewable Energy Target.

"Labor needs to walk away from this dodgy deal with Tony Abbott, which is clearly just the first step in his agenda to destroy the clean energy industry that the rest of the world is embracing," Senator Waters said.
