Greens applaud win against fracking giant Santos and warn against fracking spree

The Australian Greens applaud the work of community group Western Downs Alliance in stopping Santos dumping coal seam gas wastewater in Surat Basin rivers and streams and have warned against the federal and state government’s plan to expand fracking.

“Western Downs Alliance took on the Goliath of Santos and the Australian Government, and won,” said Australian Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson for mining and resources Larissa Waters.

Greens push to take fracking ban national

The test is on for the Nationals and the Labor party with the Senate today debating the Australian Greens’ bill to ban fracking and give landholders the right to say no to coal and unconventional gas to protect farmland, water and the climate.

Bank decision shows coal seam gas destroys property values

Commenting on reports that CommBank has refused to accept a property with CSG wells on as security for a bridging loan, Acting Greens Leader and Mining & Resources spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said:

“We’ve known all along that fracking and CSG risks our land, water and the climate – now a major bank is admitting it also risks property values.

“This is the smoking gun the industry has been trying to deny for years – that CSG destroys property values.

Greens congratulate Victoria and push for a national fracking ban

With the ban on fracking announced in Victoria, the Australian Greens will move for a nation-wide ban on fracking to protect farmland and water and call on federal Labor to follow their state colleagues and back the move.

"The move by the Victorian Government to listen to the science, the community and the Greens and ban fracking is very welcome - and should be followed by Labor Governments and oppositions around the country," said Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson on environment and mining.

Call to give farmers the legal right to refuse fracking

We give notice that on the next day of sitting we shall move that -

The Senate notes:

1.    The concern of communities in South Australia and Western Australia about their land and water being threatened by shale and other unconventional gas mining.

2.    That landholders lack the legal right to refuse shale and other unconventional gas mining on their land.

3.    The scientific uncertainty surrounding the environmental and health implications of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') for shale and other unconventional gas mining.
